Positive Representation Of Young People

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2013/oct/05/teens-social-networking-good-for-them This an representation which evidently shows how social media can have a positive affect on the future of the next generation and that social media is creating a difference which revolves around positivity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQb49TQAfL8 This is a positive representation on someone who has changed his life and committed to music. From the artist Aj Tracey doing this he has been rewarded by being nominated for two music awards for his hard work and determination for when in the studio. http://www.gstatic.com/tv/thumb/tvbanners/186593/p186593_b_v8_ab.jpg 90210 was about a couple of teenagers that were trying to find their future. Each individual brought a different background to the table but had a message on how eventually they follow their dreams. https://www.theguardian.com/society/joepublic/2009/dec/15/youth-media-summit Here is an article of a guy who is trying to change the way teenagers are stereotyped. His plan is to create a movement that will change the mentality of the way teenagers are looked at.

Positive representation of Young People

FILM:
Image result for fast girls full movie
This film shows how the youth aren't always involved in gang culture and violent behaviour. Instead, they spend their time doing useful things, such as doing sports to be healthy and also compete in the olympics. It shows a positive representation of the youth as they prepare for something which leads their future/career.

NEWS ARTICLE:

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/oct/09/youtube-zoella-mental-health-charity-mind

This article shows how the youth can use their platform to promote things of high importance and affect all. This vlogger uses Youtube, an app which is commonly used by the youth, to engage with other viewers to discuss topics. This shows how she spends her time promoting serious public issues.

Postive Representation Of Young People

1) News Article -

Why young people are now less likely to smoke

The online article uses scientific studies and stats to show how smoking has become unpopular within the youth today. This article shows youth in a postive light, as it shows that they aren't risking there health like generations of the past.

2)Film -
The Social Network (2010)
Is a film that shows Mark Zuckerberg rise to a social media mogul why he is still in university, however the representation may be only good as its is factual and actually a biography so the representation presented can't be forged.

3) Radio Interview -
Santan Dave
This is a recording of an Radio interview from one of New York's (USA) top urban radio stations Hot97 talking to a 19 year old British teenager about his successes in music. This represents youth as more creative when it comes to arts and media compared to there older counterparts.

4) Warm Up Sessions [S9.EP43]: SBTV -
Big Zuu
The Youtube channel known as SBTV is known to give youth on the streets of london a voice for a while (pre 2010), it allows them to communicate on all types of issues through urban music and even singing. This one tackles the trials and tribulations of youth growing up in urban enviroments , however the young artist talks about him staying on a straight path.

Positive representations of teenagers

Overall the representation of youths in the media is negative. However there are many forms of media that go against this. For example:
FAST GIRLS- film.

This is a film that portrays youths in a positive way. This is because girls are seen competing in the Olympics and being successful as opposed to hanging around on the streets, getting drunk, and the involvement in criminal activity. This therefore shows a different side to the teenagers and rejects the view that other media forms try to make teenagers seem violent and aggressive as a 'collective identity'.  This goes against Adorno's idea that different platforms represent people in the same way.

ARTICAL

This article is about teenagers wanting a better future, which goes against Althusser's idea that teenagers accept the stereotype they have given as these teenagers are trying to change that. Even though it is a right wig article it show a positive view on youths. Both forms are examples of Giroux idea of that the media representation of youths does not reflect the reality of identity, as most forms put forward a negative representation.

Positive representations of teenagers

This is a positive representation of teenagers as the storyline doesn't revolve around a material existence of symbol as Althusser states. This supports Fiske's argument instead of Adorno's notion that teenagers are perpetuated as rebellious throughout the culture industry. The teenagers in this are part of extra-curricular activities, the main one being a theatrical production. There is mostly an inherent sense of innocence, specifically around the romantic plot between the protagonists.

Glee displays less of an ideological state apparatus as the adults and children cooperate, however there is still a definite sense of authority and binary between adults and young people. The teenagers are part of a glee club and as shown above, diversified as opposed to shown as a collective identity revolving around stereotypes as a navigation point. Conversely, in contrast to High School Musical the teenager do still partake in some stereotypical behaviours.

Media texts that I feel offer positive representations of young people:

Social media such as Instagram accounts:
I think this type of media text gives a positive representation of young people because they show the persons real personality that challenges the stereotype of young people in the media

Magazines:
This type of media text also shows young people positively because there isn't anything negative written about them like there is in the news and newspapers.

APPLYING THEORY

Applying Theory - Shank

Applying theory activity - Case study 2

Moral panic:
- A moral panic is a crisis within society induced often by a supposed threat to society. An example of this in Shank is the general post-apocalyptic London as a threat to society as it resulted in stealing and violence, therefore creating a moral panic.

Youth sub-culture:
- Individual or underground groups with the youth culture, a subsection of a culture therefore a sub-culture. In Shank, there are several gangs within the collective group of teenagers and young people; The Papercha$ers, The Souljahz, The Slaughter Gurls.

Repetition of realism and sameness:
- The culture industry perpetuates the idea of uniform stereotypes or "sameness" through all media formats. This is seen as a continuation of real life. The use of costumes such as hoodies, short-hand language and the location of the Heyweather Estate creates a sense of realism and echoes reality.

Folk devils:
- A group of people condemned by society and seen as a threat, often folk devils create a moral panic. In Shank, The Souljahz are a specific gang that embody negative stereotypes of teenagers and adult fears enforced by the media. They are involved with crime and violence, seen as feral and anarchistic.

ISA (dominant ideology):
- The theory that institutions, often run by the dominant group, enforce ruling class values to condition society into accepting the dominant ideology. The young people in Shank still respect most adult authority as they go to them for advice and seek help. Without the adults The Papercha$ers would not have access to the information they need. Whisper is integral to their scheme and he embodies the dominant group as he is a white, middle aged male with power.

The reinforcement and paradox of individual or collective identity:
- Stereotypes are drawn from collective groups and weaken individual identity. The papercha$ers are part of the collective group of young people, gangs etc. This takes away or weakens their individual identities such as pacifists.

Osgeby:
- Media represented youth crime, violence and sexual license as indicators of social decline. Sex and drugs are particularly used in the film and given the apocalypse, emphasises social decline.

Giroux:
- Young people can experiment with different identities. Junior's struggle with taking revenge shows his struggle to conforming with stereotypical representations of teenagers and to rejecting it and being the pacifist/non-violent gang member he was in the beginning.
